What do I need to know about trailer weights?

Tare Mass – The tare mass of a trailer refers to its total weight when unoccupied, with no load, and equipped with all standard equipment and fitted options. Fluid reservoirs, such as water tanks and wastewater tanks, are measured empty. After-market optional add-ons, like TVs, mattresses, extra gas bottles, and awnings, are not included in the tare mass and should be considered as part of the load, which must be included in the ATM measurement.

Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM) – The ATM of a trailer is its total weight when carrying the maximum load recommended by the manufacturer. It is measured when the trailer is unhitched and resting on its jockey wheel. It’s important not to exceed the maximum ATM. To ensure compliance, weigh your loaded trailer while resting on its jockey wheel, including full water tank, gas tanks, and all travel essentials, making sure the measured weight does not exceed the specified ATM capacity.

Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) – The GTM refers to the maximum weight of a fully loaded trailer when hitched to a tow vehicle. It excludes the weight distributed to the towing vehicle through the coupling. It’s important not to exceed the specified GTM. To ensure compliance, weigh your loaded trailer while attached to your towing vehicle, including full water tank, gas tanks, and all travel essentials, making sure the measured weight doesn’t exceed the specified GTM capacity.
